Almost Midnight is a festive collection of two short and very sweet stories, perfect to read during the holidays!

The first story, Midnights takes place at a New Year’s Eve party and shows the blossoming love between two friends, Mags and Noel. This was such a cute and humorous story but something I really liked which made the story a little more special and relatable was the fact that  Mags was someone who stayed at home for uni whilst everyone around her moved away. She could see all of her peers changing around her, growing whilst she felt like she was the same girl she’d always been. But it was Noel who thought out of all their friends, Mags was the most different. It just reminded me that there are so many different ways that people can grow, and that we don’t have to go through huge transitions in order to change.

The second story, Kindred Spirits was just a very cute and entertaining story about Elena, a huge Star Wars fan who decided to camp out in front of the movie theatre to catch the premiere of the latest film. At first I was a bit dubious about how much I’d like this because of the whole Star Wars element but it wasn’t a problem at all in fact, it ended up being relatable. Elena was a lovely main character and it’s just really interesting seeing how she copes with roughing it on the streets but also, how her friendship blossoms with her fellow fans 😉  I was really happy to discover that Elena was a POC (hooray for diversity!)

So overall, Almost Midnight is a sweet, simple, and heartwarming read that will surely put a smile on your face. The illustrations are lovely bonus as well, they style match the theme of the stories perfectly and just add a little magic to them. This is a book I’d 100% recommend!

Happy new year, all.

Best wishes xo
